bseeingu Brian

Way back in 2007, Brian co-created a series of ARGs called Eldritch Errors. A big part of the first game were dozens of posts to Craigslist Missed Connections. Each post was a character looking for someone she met in a dream. Several of the players and a fellow co-creator knew that this was the perfect way to memorialize Brian – more than a bit surreal and a truly phenomenal way for people to celebrate a life so well lived.

We can hear Brian laughing at the very idea.

Any and all are encouraged to join in on this adventure. The more people post, the more memories are preserved, and the more celebratory the whole thing will become. So, please, join us. And tell your friends!

It’s easy!

All it takes is a simple post to Missed Connections. Write a memory, a thought, or a favorite Clarkism. It doesn’t matter. You can even include pictures and a map to a specific location if you’d like.

There are rules, though. Two of them. They exist to make it possible for our bot to find the posts and add them to the archive.

  1. Post to Craigslist Missed Connections (here’s a detailed walkthrough, if you need it)
  2. Include “bseeingu” somewhere in the post

Now, those are the rules. We also have a few suggestions.

  • Post in a city that is meaningful to you & Brian. This could be where you went to school or worked with him, the location of a conference, a favorite trip, a place you joked about, where you live…
  • Make the post about a specific memory or memorable conversation. Or! Get creative and memorialize him in a story, a poem, a picture. Just remember, these are public and will be archived. It doesn’t have to be clean in language or content, though there will be an audience, so keep that in mind.
  • Sign the post. Instead of including “bseeingu” somewhere within the message, you can sign it with:

bseeingu
Brooke (only with your name, nickname, initials)

  • Post on Saturday, the day of his memorial. If Saturday won’t work for you, no big deal! The bot is already running and will continue to do so. We just thought it would be neat if a mass of them showed up on the day of the memorial. Plus, it’s a great way for those of us who can’t attend to join in the celebration.
  • Check in on The Archive. There you will be able to see all of the bseeingu posts, including yours.

If you have the time and want to do more to flood Craigslist, write memories in multiple cities. Or, grab a city and make a post that includes a favorite Brian quote or joke or whatever. Cities where Brian lived (Kansas City, Columbia, Orlando, NYC) will, hopefully, see a few posts, so look for random places like Wollongong, Australia or Ahmedabad, India. If you are looking for someplace unique, check out this spreadsheet with all of the cities and which have been posted to. If you plan on doing a lot of cities, look the bottom of this post for tips on avoiding your posts being removed or hidden.

SUGGESTED FORMAT:

You do not have to follow this format. It just happens to be the format used for the Eldritch Errors posts and it’s a fairly classic “missed connection” setup.

Title as cryptic or specific as desired
You: (very brief description of what Brian was doing or wearing)
Me: (very brief description of what you were doing or wearing)

The actual event or memory.

Author Name (name, nickname, initials, whatever)

Examples:

Here is an actual post I made to Harrisonburg, VA while creating the “Posting to Missed Connections” walkthrough. You don’t have to be as wordy. Nor do you have to map the location or add a picture. But you can if you want!

Quick FAQ

  1. You do not have to create an account to post on Craigslist.
  2. Your post will be up for 45 days (unless it is hidden or flagged for removal)
  3. The bot is currently running once a day. It will run more frequently over the next few days and then slow back down. As long as you used “bseeingu” and posted to Missed Connections, it will be caught. If it’s been a while and you’re still not seeing it, your post may have been flagged or hidden.
  4. You can see all the posts as soon as the archive bot catches them on The Archive.
  5. We also have an rss feed which includes the live bseeingu craigslist posts (CL deletes posts after 45 days)

Link to a detailed walkthrough of how to post to Craigslist Missed Connections. It will show you how to find and switch cities, how to post to the personals, and every step along the way.

Making multiple posts? Yay! But, be warned, Craigslist may delete or hide your posts if it thinks you are a spammer or scammer. You can read more on ghosting and flagging, but the gist of it is to not simply repost the same content in multiple cities and to use multiple email addresses. A few posts on the same email address won’t be a problem, but if you are going to do more than that, use additional email addresses.
